How it works

One clear answer for every address.

PFS connects fire agencies, air quality regulators and forestry departments with the communities they protect. Before You Burn, our first program, puts that to work for every outdoor burn.

The platform

Resolve, enforce, communicate.

Resolve

Every address maps to the agencies with authority over it: county, fire district, state forestry, air quality and federal land.

Enforce

Where jurisdictions overlap, the most restrictive closure or rule applies, automatically.

Communicate

Agencies post alerts once, and residents get location-specific notice when conditions change.

For residents

Four steps before every burn.

Before You Burn
  1. Drop a pin

Enter an address or share your location to find the agency that covers you.

  2. Check today’s status

See whether burning is allowed today, and the current fire danger.

  3. Read the rules

Read your zone’s rules in plain language and accept the terms.

  4. Register your burn

Tell your agency where and when you will burn, so they can reach you if conditions change.

For agencies

Tools for every agency type.

Every agency gets tools for its own role, inside one shared system, so residents see one answer.

Local fire districts

Manage burn permits, closures and community notices for the district, and track active burns.

County government

Set county-wide restrictions, coordinate with the fire districts inside the county and keep oversight across zones.

State forestry

Manage industrial and regulated burns, set statewide closures and publish fire danger to every agency.

Air quality agencies

Issue air quality advisories that restrict burning in the zones they affect.

Federal land managers

Coordinate prescribed burns on BLM, USFS and other federal land, with local agencies kept in the loop.

In sync with the Oregon Department of Forestry

Fire danger, straight from ODF.

Oregon Department of Forestry

Oregon agencies get fire danger from ODF automatically. Your agency can raise the level for local conditions but never set it below ODF's.

Low

Fuels don't ignite easily. Burning is usually allowed where your zone is open.

Moderate

Fires can start from most sources. Watch the wind and stay with your burn.

High

Fires start easily and spread fast. Many zones restrict or close burning.

Extreme

Fires start and spread explosively. Expect burning to be closed.

Integrations

Connects the systems you already use.

PFS doesn't replace your existing systems. It brings their data into one operating picture for your staff and one answer for residents.

  • GIS boundary data for state, county, district and federal land
  • National Weather Service fire weather forecasts
  • Oregon Department of Forestry fire danger levels
  • EPA and state air quality monitoring
  • Oregon burn registration frameworks
  • CAD and dispatch interoperability (planned)

See it working for your jurisdiction.

Tell us about your agency and we'll show you your own boundaries and rules in the platform.
